MyKad
Malaysia's national identity card, issued to all citizens and permanent residents aged 12+.
MyKad (Kad Pengenalan Malaysia) is Malaysia's mandatory national identity card, issued by the National Registration Department (JPN). It is a smart card containing the holder's photograph, fingerprint biometrics, and a contactless NFC chip. The card number (12-digit IC number) serves as the universal patient identifier across all Malaysian healthcare systems. MyKad was introduced in 2001, replacing the laminated Kad Pengenalan, and is now the primary identity document used for hospital check-in, insurance claims, and government service access.
Malaysian Context
MyKad is issued to all Malaysian citizens and permanent residents aged 12 and above. 35M+ cards are in circulation. The NFC chip stores basic demographics readable without authentication, enabling instant hospital check-in.
